BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems (Top-up)

The final year BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems is specifically designed to provide students with a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of all the key business-related areas whether you are interested in working for someone else or starting your own business. Combining the best of both worlds, this program will equip you with cutting edge business management skills as well as information technology support to manage any business.

Programme Objective

To provide a comprehensive and balanced programme of business and computing knowledge and skills required for business in the information age

To develop well educated and skilled people who understand the managerial and strategic issues associated with implementing information systems;

To provide a relevant and flexible study in the field of Business Information Management;

To develop student’s ability to work independently.

To provide students with the ability to synthesise knowledge, understanding and practical skills in a vocational context. To provide students with the analytical and evaluative skills commensurate with degree level higher education. That is, to develop students’ intellectual and imaginative powers, their understanding and judgement; their problem-solving skills; their ability to communicate; their ability to see relationships within what they have learned and to perceive their study of business information systems in a broader perspective.

  • 1. Information Systems Project
    • After completing this module the student should be able to organise, manage and design an individual project. Specify the nature of the problem being investigated, stating Aims and Objectives that are appropriate, realistic and achievable. Conduct a literature review within the context of the problem. Develop and apply appropriate academic theories and methods in the resolution of the problem. Critically analyse and report on the results of research findings. Critically evaluate alternative approaches appropriate to a defined problem. Critically evaluate the research or development project and identify areas for further work. Explain and defend their work via a viva voce examination.
  • 2. Information Systems Project Managment
    • After completing this module the student should be able to plan, monitor and control small scale projects in areas of familiar technology. Determine the resource requirements of projects in a range of areas. Select and make use of appropriate software and approaches for project management functions and estimate effort using modelling techniques. Categorize and comprehend various levels of software reuse. Explain the principles of software quality assurance and metrics Evaluate the main themes of business process re-engineering.
  • 3. Professional and Ethical Issues in Information Systems
    • After completing this module the student should be able to specify the main characteristics of a contract of service and a contract of services within the Information Systems environment, and appreciate the implications of each. Compare the major forms of equality rights available to information systems personnel. Critically evaluate the concept of employee monitoring and its perceived use in organisations. Compare the social and professional responsibilities of those involved in the management and development of computer based information systems. Appraise ethical concerns associated with information privacy, accuracy and accessibility, and understand the role of the Data Protection Act 1998 (and associated legislation) in regulating these aspects both nationally and internationally. Critique the ethical dimensions that would apply to the design, construction and use of information systems. Appraise the impact of technology on employment and the skills portfolio required of employees.
  • 4. Network and Internet Security
    • After completing this module the student should be able to appraise the threats to the security of computer network systems and appreciate the range of countermeasures which may be employed Critically evaluate the use of error detection systems in terms of characteristics and limitations Justify the need for different methods of data compression and critically discuss their operation Contrast the security aspects of different methods of data encryption Critically evaluate secure transaction systems.
  • 5. Information Systems in Business
    • After completing this module the student should be able to appraise the extent and provision of sources of data for information processing from both within and external to the organisation. Contrast the environment, both internal and external, in which information systems have to operate. Critique the system theory approach to management concepts and decision making. Compare various information systems and identify the categories of specific systems. Specify how information technology can provide solutions to business problems and provide opportunities for organisations
